Learning Spanish Verbs Easily And Quickly

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

By Joseph Carducci

Many people who are just starting out in their study of the Spanish language think that it will be very difficult to learn the Spanish verbs. Please do not worry, the verbs are not difficult to learn, it only requires a little effort and attention.

Something to consider is the fact that many Spanish verbs are very similar to their English counterparts. It only seems strange because of the way that these verbs are conjugated in Spanish. Conjugation is really just a fancy way of matching the proper form to each word. For example, you would not say he run, but instead he ran. In this instance, the verb form changed from run to ran. This simple conjugation shows that we do the exact same thing in English.

The only major difference in the conjugation of verbs between Spanish and English is the number of forms. There are at least 7 different forms in the Spanish language. English only has 5 or 6 different verb forms. Even though there are more forms to learn in Spanish, these are usually based on fairly standard word endings. Therefore, once you have learned these endings (which is actually pretty easy), you can then apply them to the verbs.

A verb’s most basic form is called an infinitive. Do not worry if this term sounds unfamiliar to you, they are the same thing in English. Every verb (in almost every language) has this infinitive form. Some languages, such as English, start their infinitive form with the word to in front. For example, to run is the infinitive of the word run in English. Spanish infinitives are only single words, such as hablar, which means to speak. Learning these infinitives will help you to master Spanish verbs very quickly.

There are also words and verbs which do not follow the typical pattern. Which is to say, they are different from a typical infinitive with an ending. These are classified as irregular verbs. A good example of this would be the verb to be. In English this is conjugated as I am, she is, you are, we are and they are. The Spanish form of to be is ser. It is conjugated in a different manner, yo soy, tu eres, ellas es and ellos estan.

You will also need to be familiar with the various tenses and their forms. This encompasses the present, past, past perfect, etc. As an example, take the English verb help. Its past tense would be helped. This is a regular verb in the regular past tense. See is an example of a verb that has an irregular past tense (saw).

Once you have mastered the conjugations of the verb infinitives and the various endings, you can move on to other things. Such as the various verbs in different tenses. Next, it is a smart idea to move on to learning some of the irregular verbs and how to conjugate them.

Armed with this knowledge and just a moderate amount of vocabulary, you should be able to understand and carry on an intelligent conversation in your new language. The main thing to remember as you start (and continue) learning Spanish is that it is structured very similarly to English. This will help you to stay focused and understand what you are learning even more effectively.

Spanish is really a pretty simple language in terms of its vocabulary and structure. Once you get a basic understanding of these, you will have no trouble at all. From there it is simply a matter of how far you want to go and what degree of fluency you wish to attain. A good suggestion is that once you have mastered the above facets to find a good conversational course. This is something that will get you actually speaking the living language in the fastest possible time. It is also the best way to really learn a language, especially if you will be using it on a practical level.

You can learn Spanish. Quickly, easily and pain-free! Whether your goal is for travel, business, self improvement, or any other reason, it is achievable. Our new secret method can have you actually speaking and using Spanish within just 2 short months.
